Dry Spell
Copyright © 2001 Kevin Cook

That was the summer it all went to hell,
That was the summer we had the dry spell
Every night we prayed for rain
But it never came.

Just the dirty wind blowin’,
dirty wind blowin’
All across the prairie.

Little brother he got eaten by the hogs
Daddy started drinkin’
and the place went to the dogs.
Bessy gave birth to that two-headed calf
Mama said it was an omen
and hard times were comin’.

Dirty wind blowin’, dirty wind blowin’
All across the prairie.
Plant the seed, nothin’ grows,
Sun beats down
And the dirty wind blows.

Daddy just sits there starin’ into space
He tried so hard to make a go of this place.
But the man from the bank says
he can’t wait no more
He’s coming around next month
to put a lock on the door.

And the dirty wind blowin’,
dirty wind blowin’
All across the prairie.

That was the summer it all went to hell
That was the summer we had the dry spell.
